Closing Birdies Seal Stolz Triumph

Andre Stolz produced a final round of 68 to win the Indonesia PGA Championship by a stroke from Rory Hie in Jakarta.

The 40-year-old’s four-under-par effort saw him finish on 14 under for the tournament and edge out local hero Hie as birdies at the 17th, where he sank a 35-foot putt, and 18th proved decisive.

A couple of years ago I thought I would never play again and now I am standing here with a trophy for a US$1million event. It will take some time to sink in,” said Stolz, who had been previously forced to retire due to a wrist injury.

“I had to completely remodel my swing. The second half of last year I started to play really well and this week I played great but the putter was misbehaving.”

Overnight leader Hie’s even-par 72 was only good enough for second as bogeys at the 10th and 12th and a double bogey at the 11th cost the 22-year-old.

“I really thought this was going to be my week,” he said.

“I had prepared so hard. However, I am proud of the way I finished the round and this final day has been a great learning experience.”

New Zealand’s Gareth Paddison and Korean Park Eun-shin shared third after carding rounds of 68 and 70 respectively.
