SENDAI (Jiji Press) — Skymark Airlines on Saturday reopened regular passenger service between Sendai and Kobe, cities both hit hard by major earthquakes, a route that the airline closed following its 2015 bankruptcy filing.

The Japanese airline’s first flight from Kobe airport in Hyogo Prefecture arrived at Sendai airport in Miyagi Prefecture in the morning, coinciding with the first anniversary of the privatization of Sendai airport.

This marked the first resumption of service on a route that had been operated by Skymark before its bankruptcy.

“We’ve managed to come back to Sendai sooner than we’d expected,” Skymark President Masahiko Ichie told a ceremony held at Sendai airport to mark the reopening of the route.

Since the privatization, Sendai airport has taken steps to improve its services, including renovating a tourism office and opening a cafe in the arrival lobby.

In fiscal 2016 through last March, the number of international passengers using the airport grew some 40 percent from the previous year, led by an increase in visitors from abroad.
